Overview & Strategy
SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC) is a fully managed SaaS solution that unifies and governs all SAP data and seamlessly connects with third-party data, preserving critical business context for AI-driven insights.
What is SAP Business Data Cloud?
Announced as a strategic evolution of SAP's data portfolio, SAP BDC signifies a major shift from disjointed, legacy data extraction mindsets. Rather than forcing customers to extract raw SAP data (and lose all its valuable business context and semantics) into third-party hyperscalers, SAP BDC unifies SAP ERP, big data, and analytics into a single, cohesive ecosystem.
The Key Differentiator: Raw data is often useless for AI without context. SAP BDC ensures that data retains its original business logic, hierarchies, and security semantics as it moves into the cloud or into external AI platforms like Databricks.
The Rebranding & Evolution
SAP BDC is not entirely built from scratch. It is an evolution that brings together SAP's flagship data management and analytics solutions—SAP Datasphere, SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC), and SAP Business Warehouse (BW)—and embeds them with new capabilities like Managed SAP Databricks and Intelligent Applications.
Existing installations of Datasphere and SAC continue to run without interruption, but BDC provides a unified commercial and technical framework to integrate them flawlessly.
Getting Started
The Business Data Fabric
SAP Business Data Cloud is the core technological pillar enabling SAP's "Business Data Fabric" architecture.
What is a Data Fabric?
Traditionally, organizations built Data Lakes or Data Warehouses, which required physically moving, copying, and transforming data into a single central repository. This process is slow, expensive, and error-prone.
A Data Fabric is a modern architecture that focuses on data integration and governance across distributed landscapes. Instead of moving the data, a fabric connects the data virtually, placing a unified semantic layer over top of it.
SAP's "Business" Data Fabric
SAP adds the word "Business" because typical IT data fabrics lack the application context. SAP BDC’s Business Data Fabric specifically understands SAP S/4HANA domains, SuccessFactors structures, and Ariba documents natively. It harmonizes data from all SAP line-of-business (LoB) solutions automatically.
1
Connect, Don't Collect
Leverage federation to query data directly from source systems or hyperscalers without physical replication where appropriate.
2
Preserve Context
Maintain the rich semantic meaning (e.g., currency conversions, parent-child hierarchies) inherent in SAP source systems.
3
Govern Globally
Apply data security and compliance (like GDPR tags) at the semantic layer, ensuring it follows the data everywhere it is consumed.
Core Components
SAP Databricks Integration
One of the most powerful features of SAP BDC is its deep, native integration with Databricks, eliminating the need to build complex ETL pipelines.
BDC Connect to Databricks
Using the open standard of Delta Sharing, SAP teams can publish governed SAP data products directly into the Databricks platform. This means Data Scientists using Databricks can access SAP data instantly without IT having to build fragile data extraction jobs.
Syncing Semantic Metadata to Unity Catalog
Traditionally, when data leaves SAP, it turns into meaningless tables with German abbreviations (e.g., MARA, BUKRS). SAP BDC solves this by automatically syncing Semantic Metadata into the Databricks Unity Catalog.
- Descriptions: English business descriptions are synced.
- Relationships: Primary and Foreign key relationships are maintained, allowing GenAI to understand how tables join.
- Governance Tags: SAP PersonalData governance tags are automatically synced, enabling fine-grained Attribute-Based Access Control (ABAC) inside Databricks.
AI Readiness: By maintaining the embedded domain logic, Databricks AI agents and LLMs built on top of this data are highly accurate, as they understand the business context rather than just raw numbers.
Core Components
Legacy BW Modernization
SAP BDC provides a graceful path for organizations with massive investments in legacy SAP BW or BW/4HANA systems.
Gradual Evolution, Not Rip-and-Replace
SAP acknowledges that ripping out a mature BW system is often too risky and expensive. BDC allows for a hybrid transition. Customers can optimize their existing SAP BW data by turning BW queries and models into "Data Products" exposed within the Business Data Cloud.
Extended Data Integration
Through SAP Datasphere (acting as the integration layer), existing BW models can be connected and federated with new third-party data sources. This allows organizations to leverage modern AI and machine learning capabilities on their historical BW data without forcing a massive, immediate migration.
AI & Governance
Data Products & BDC Cockpit
SAP BDC adopts the "Data Mesh" philosophy by treating data as a product rather than a mere IT asset.
What is a Data Product?
A Data Product is a curated, governed, and reusable package of data, metadata, and business semantics. Instead of sharing raw tables, a business unit (e.g., HR) curates a "Headcount & Turnover" data product. This product has an owner, an SLA, and clear documentation.
Industry Specificity: SAP provides pre-built data products. For example, Sustainability data products (for environment, health, and safety management) provide structured, validated information on emissions out-of-the-box.
The BDC Cockpit
The BDC Cockpit is the central management interface for the entire ecosystem. Here, Data Stewards can:
- Centrally publish, manage, and discover Data Products in an enterprise catalog.
- Monitor consumption and usage metrics across the organization.
- Enforce global governance, security, and privacy policies.
AI & Governance
Semantic Metadata & Knowledge Graph
To drive powerful business AI, the system must understand the complex relationships and attributes hidden within enterprise data.
The Value of Semantics
SAP systems are highly normalized. A single business object (like a Sales Order) might span dozens of tables. The Semantic Layer in BDC abstracts this complexity, presenting the data as logical business entities that non-technical users and AI agents can understand.
SAP Knowledge Graph
Built directly into the core of SAP BDC (via Datasphere), the Knowledge Graph maps the connections between different data entities (e.g., linking an Employee to a Department, to a Cost Center, to a specific Procurement Request).
By exposing data as a graph rather than flat tables, organizations can execute highly complex, relationship-driven queries that are impossible in standard relational databases, unlocking entirely new capabilities for generative AI contextualization.
AI & Governance
Intelligent Applications
SAP BDC is not just a data backend; it provides front-end applications powered by AI that adapt in real-time.
Beyond Static Dashboards
While SAP Analytics Cloud provides traditional dashboards and reporting, Intelligent Applications are proactive. They automate processes, adapt to changing data inputs, and learn over time.
Example: People Intelligence Package
Announced at SAP Sapphire, this package is an Intelligent Application built on BDC designed for HR. It analyzes workforce data across SAP SuccessFactors and external platforms to help leaders make proactive decisions, predict employee turnover, drive engagement, and ensure compliance autonomously.
Customers can also utilize the BTP foundation to build their own custom Intelligent Applications using BDC as the harmonized data source.
Administration
Capacity Unit (CU) Pricing
With the introduction of SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP is heavily pivoting its licensing strategy from user-based seats to consumption-based Capacity Units (CUs).
The Shift to Capacity Units
Historically, products like SAP Analytics Cloud were licensed per user (e.g., a BI User license or a Planning Professional license). Under the BDC model, many of these are shifting:
- SAC Public Cloud Edition (PCE): Will move out of the standard CPEA license model and transition from user-based licenses to capacity-units-based pricing.
- SAP Datasphere & BW PCE: Will continue to use capacity-based pricing (sizing based on compute and storage needs).
- SAP Databricks: Follows the CU pricing model for compute consumed during data processing and AI workloads.
Intelligent App Licensing
Intelligent Apps (like Insight Apps) typically follow a different metric, often priced based on the source system's Full-User Equivalents (FUEs) rather than strict compute capacity.
Transitioning: SAP provides pathways for existing Datasphere and SAC customers to transition their legacy licenses into the new unified Business Data Cloud commercial framework seamlessly.
